About the 2020 Transportation Annual Technology Baseline

The Transportation Annual Technology Baseline (ATB) provides a set of assumptions that can be used in analyses and projections across the transportation sector. Projections are presented through the year 2050.

Use of the assumptions in the Transportation ATB can provide consistency across analysis projects and modeling, facilitate the tracking and sourcing of input assumptions, and reduce the lead time in conducting scenario analysis.

These assumptions are based on previously published resources and will be reviewed annually. Given the rapid pace of technology improvement and market advancement the assumptions here may not reflect the most recent trends. Data will be updated on an annual basis to reflect updated cost and performance trajectories as they become available.

Transportation ATB Team

The Transportation ATB is led by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), assembled by a team of analysts from the U.S. Department of Energy's national laboratories, and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.

The 2020 Transportation ATB team members include:

  • Biofuels: Mary Biddy and Chris Kinchin, NREL
  • Light-duty vehicles (except fuel cell electric vehicles): David Gohlke, Argonne National Laboratory
  • Fuel cell electric vehicles and hydrogen supply: Amgad Elgowainy, Argonne National Laboratory
  • Vehicle energy consumption and cost: Ehsan Islam, Aymeric Rousseau, Argonne National Laboratory
  • Project coordination, data development, and website production: Laura Vimmerstedt, Paige Jadun, Tom King, Matteo Muratori, Jim Vezina, Amy Vaughn Liles, Jeremy Jenkins, and Mike Bannister, NREL.

The ATB is one of many data products that the NREL energy analysis staff provides.

Transportation ATB Sponsor

The ATB—which is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Strategic Priorities and Impact Analysis Team, Bioenergy Technologies Office, Vehicle Technologies Office, and Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office—leverages and continues significant activity funded by the U.S. Energy Department of Energy and the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy for individual technologies and market segments.
